Responsive web design

Infographic showing stats around mobile web usage and why responsive design is needed.Almost everyone wants a mobile version of their web site. One for the iPhone, one for Android, one for blackberry, one for the iPad and the list goes on and will only get longer as new devices come along. The answer to this problem is to design a website which responds to the visitor's environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. This design concept is based upon a mix of flexible grids, layouts and images providing the technology to automatically respond to the user's equipment preferences.

Adjusting to screen resolution

With each new device or gadget comes varying screen resolutions, definitions and as we know, the ability to switch between portrait and landscape at the user's whim. So how do you possibly design for all these situations?
Part of the answer to this problem is to produce sites where nearly everything is flexible, using fluid grids for the layout and fluid images within. However resizing and positioning does not always look great so images can also be replaced or re-styled.
Another element to responsive design is custom layouts where extreme size changes mean moving elements around the page while the styles are inherited from the previous layout. During this process whole sections can also be hidden or replaced with links to reduce the amount of scrolling needed on smaller devices.
